“Hyderabad: Bank employee dies by suicide over work stress”

News Nine – Jan 10,2025

Who will not be concerned after seeing those employees from one Industry citing reason as STRESS committing suicide? The industry which is one of the most thriving one in India and off course pays well to its employees, BANKING. What’s wrong here that the employees are deciding to end their life? As, I myself spent 29+ years working at a bank, it pains me as to why my colleagues are doing this. Let me share a few thoughts that may help someone in need.

First of all, dear young generation, please understand that suicide is NOT the solution to any stress. By ending life, stress increases by 10x to your nears and dears. Nothing will happen to the Organization as it will carry on without even a mourning for you. I will not ask anyone to face it but please talk to someone who can offer a helping hand or who can listen to you patiently, your spouse, sibling, friend, etc. If you don’t have the one, play with a toddler, the innocent will suck the stress out of you. If you don’t’ have that also, talk to me, but please don’t leave us.

If the employees commit suicide citing stress as reason, organizations are expected to take certain immediate steps to address the problem. I suggest following points that can be taken at organization level.

  • Provide stress management trainings to employees away from the office environment and not online.
  • Provide good and effective communication skills to those who are in commanding offices.
  • Provide suitable training to employees specially branch heads regarding their work, as knowledge and skill reduces stress.
  • Strict action on observing abusive language by any employee, irrespective of cadre.
  • Appoint senior employees, even retirees as councilors to a few juniors.
  • Avoid using transfer as a tool of punishment. It only harasses; it doesn’t improve productivity.
  • Introduce Golden Hand Shake policy* with the employees who are non- performing and cannot be motivated to work. However, this should be used judicially after exhausting all training and guidance efforts.

These are just a few Sillypoints and there can be many more ways to save lives of those who are tender hearted and deserve to live. A little empathy is needed to help them out of their difficult time.

* A policy where employee and management agree to mutually disengage and end the service contract.

Each employee has to enrich EI( emotional intelligence) first before embarking on AI(artificial intelligence). Believe in yourself. Nobody can steal your knowledge and experience. Be proud and exuberant.

  3. Very nice suggestions Hasan saheb. You practiced these when you were in commanding position at Gorakhpur. That’s why you could articulate the tips for top management so beautifully.. Post VRS, you are doing a very noble job. In continuation of this article, you can suggest some tips for the employees who are going through the stress and some suggestions for the co workers.
