BLOG 38/2025 DATED 23RD DECEMBER 2025
Looks an outdated topic, as from centuries God has been believed, has been the integral part of faith of most human being but in different forms and understandings. Still there are a few numbers of people who deny the existence of God. With the advent of modern scientific knowledge, the question has risen further ‘Does God Exist’.
The religions around the world are more or less accept the existence and omnipotent status of God and give logic that the entire Universe and beyond is His creation and it is He who controls and runs the entire system of life, death and whatever is in between. The non-believer argues that on the basis of logic and scientific studies the existence of God cannot be proved and hence they can’t believe in something that is not certain, these set of people are generally called Atheist.
Western world has progressed as far as liberal discourses are concerned and they have allowed people to come forward and put up their point of views. There has been many debates and dialogues between the faiths as well as faith vs existence of God. However, In Indian subcontinent people are more glued to their religion and often to the level of intolerance. This became the reason for people not opening up on the issue and the topic remain under the carpet at least in the near past.
With such environment a dialogue was carried out at Constitution Club New Delhi on 20th December 2025 on the subject “Does God Exist”. The speakers were Mr Jawed Akhtar who represented an Atheist point of view and Mufti Shamail who represented in favour of the existence of God. The issue is not as to who won the debate or who dominated. The main reason I appreciated the dialogue is that, it was conducted in extreme cordial environment. The moderator of the debate Mr Saurabh Dwivedi (Editor, The Lallantop) was also awesome in handling it. In fact, the whole debate that runs for around 2 hours was fully controlled by him. He was totally just, impartial and confident, and carried the entire discourse with humour and wit.
Such discourses show the maturity level of Indian intellectuals as well as Indian audience. It gives a feeling that we have certainly graduated to a level where two contra views can come together and open up their point of views. There were no personal grudges, no anchor screaming out of the screen, no abusive language, very unlike a modern TV debate.
Many aspects were presented such as the argument of contingency, the decision of evil and morality, the human sufferings, infinite regression, majority decisions, time and space, historical understandings etc., all were presented with knowledge and certainty. It is not that the concepts were new, these things have been said earlier as well but the manner of discussion was appreciable.
Sillypoint congratulates Surabh Dwivedi, Mufti Shamail, Javed Akhtar, Audience and the Organisers equally for the outstanding achievement and hope for such peaceful discourses on different conflicting views in future as well.
